00 / What is BaZi

Before you read: how BaZi works命 の 地 図

BaZi (八字) — the Four Pillars of Destiny — is a system of Tenmei that took shape in ancient China. Your date and time of birth are converted into four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar carries a Heavenly Stem above and an Earthly Branch below — eight characters in total, which is what "BaZi" literally means. From those eight, the system reads your innate nature, your talents, and the way fortune moves through your life.

Year Pillar

Roots, family, childhood — and the first impression the world forms of you.

Month Pillar

Talent, work, early adulthood — the environment in which your ability actually lands.

Day Pillar

You, and what you value. The stem of this pillar — the Day Master — is your core.

Hour Pillar

The future, your private self, later life. Readable only if you know your birth time (optional).

The Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)

All eight characters sort into five elements. Which elements crowd your chart, and which are thin or missing, is what reveals your strengths, your blind spots, and the force you need to supply deliberately.

🌿 Wood 木 = growth🔥 Fire 火 = passion⛰ Earth 土 = stability⚔ Metal 金 = decision💧 Water 水 = intellect

How to read your result (3 steps)

1Start with your Day Master — the core of who you are. It is one of ten characters, and it sets your basic nature.
2Then read the four pillars as four domains of a life: roots, work, self, and future.
3Finally, use the Five-Element balance to see which force runs strong in you and which one you need to feed.

All we need is your date of birth. Time and place are optional. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere — the whole calculation runs inside your own browser.

Birth time is optional. If you don’t know it, leave it blank — we’ll read the year, month and day pillars, and your Day Master is unaffected either way.

The four cards below are your pillars. The gold-framed one is the Day Pillar — that is you. The large character underneath is your Day Master, the core of who you are. Each pillar is labelled with the domain of life it governs.

Your nature

Five-Element balance

Every element has two readings: its nature (what the element means — the same for everyone) and its role (how it relates to your Day Master — different for every person). The legend below reads "nature / role for you".

Woodgrowth & expansion / kindness, planning
Firepassion & expression / sociability, drive
Earthstability & trust / realism, capacity
Metaldecision & discipline / taste, boundaries
Waterintellect & flexibility / intuition, learning

The Ten Gods — the direction of your talent

The Ten Gods describe how each of the other stems relates to your Day Master. They tell you which force runs strongest in you — in other words, the direction your talent naturally takes.

The Twelve Stages — how much fuel you were given

The Twelve Stages map how much force your Day Master can express at each pillar, using the arc of a human life — conceived, born, growing, at the peak, declining. A high score is not better than a low one. It is a reading of how much fuel you carry: a lot suits a life lived loudly and at the front; a little suits a life of depth, focus and quiet.

Strong or Weak Day Master — how to use your power

This is decided by how many characters in your chart support your Day Master (peers and resource). Strong does not mean good, and weak does not mean bad. It means the advice for the two is the exact opposite of each other.

Compatibility — you and the ten Day Masters

How you relate to each of the ten types, read from the element cycles. A "controlling" relationship does not mean a bad person. It means friction — and friction is usually where the learning is.
